egislation to extend existing tax breaks for renewable energy has hit another roadblock in the Senate. Backers of the tax extenders’ bill on June 17 came up eight votes short of the 60 needed to end a filibuster. A similar vote on the bill failed seven days earlier. The bill includes $17 billion in credits for renewables such as solar and wind energy, plus a provision to prevent about 24 million Americans from paying the alternative minimum tax in 2008.
