The U.S. Dept. of Transportation has advised all states to do immediate inspections of the type of bridge that collapsed Aug. 1 in Minneapolis. The Federal Highway Administration guidance memorandum, announced Aug. 2, went to all state DOTs and other bridge owners.

FHWA data show there are 756 steel deck truss bridges in the U.S. with what DOT calls the "relatively unique" design of the Interstate–35 bridge in Minneapolis. DOT Secretary Mary E. Peters said, "Even though we don't know what caused this collapse, we want states to immediately and thoroughly examine all similar spans out of an abundance of caution."

In addition, Peters asked DOT's Inspector General to do "a top–to–bottom review" of the national bridge inspection program and recommend improvements that may be needed.
