Contractors will have another shot at bidding on an underwater cable relocation project as part of the $6-billion San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The California Dept. of Transportation had estimated the cable project at $6.6 million, but last month received just a single bid for $13 million from San Francisco-based California Engineering Contractors Inc. (CEC). The revised bid process will create more opportunity for multiple contractors to participate by moving from a 15-years-experience requirement to pre-bid authorization. This will enable Caltrans to audit companies and require resumes of comparable experience, qualifi- cations review and project history, says Bart Ney, Caltrans spokesperson. Final bids are expected by the end of the month. The winner will relocate a power line before construction begins on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge. Environmental restrictions limit work on the bay floor from Dec. 1 to May 31.
