President Bush signed legislation on June 6 that makes technical corrections to the 2005 SAFETEA-LU measure, clearing the way for delayed highway projects to move forward. The White House had voiced opposition to the bill, but the House and Senate passed it with veto-proof margins.

The new bill makes changes in more than 400 projects in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: a Legacy for Users. Corrections in things like route numbers and locations were needed for the projects to proceed. Some SAFETEA-LU projects were deleted; other projects had funding increased.

The bill hikes funds for federal and university transportation research and clarifies guidelines for evaluating new transit projects.
