Utah The Union Pacific Railroad is proposing to rebuild portions of a 20-mile long causeway across the Great Salt Lake. The causeway, originally built in the 1950s, separates the lake into two sections, which over time have developed differing salt levels, as the southern section gets flushed by inflows from the Jordan, Weber and Bear Rivers. The project entails constructing a 180-ft-long bridge to allow more bidirectional water flow, and replacing two existing culverts. These proposed changes will impact the brine shrimp industry, the salt-harvesting industry, and the value of the lake as a major bird habitat, so they will require approval by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project is valued at $100 million. Union Pacific Railroad, Engineering Dept., Attn: Bob Hennessey, Project Manager, 5500 Ferguson Dr., Commerce, Calif., 90022. DR#13-00406375.
