This replacement of a century-old hospital created a new, 360,000-sq-ft institution. Special outreach by the project team resulted in contracts with 40 local firms and achieved 70% local workforce participation. By having the core group at St. Mary’s make decisions related to cost control, schedule management, design, safety, quality, dispute resolution and team selection, the best interests of the project were always the top consideration, according to project team members. The project achieved maximum efficiency through the use of technology, modular construction and staff team-building. As a result, the hospital opened two months earlier than expected and at a cost $3 million under budget.
