Kansas West Star Development is planning to build the Futsal City USA Center in Lenexa. (Futsal is a modified version of soccer, played with five players per side, on a smaller, indoor field.) The facility will include a 128,000-sq-ft building containing nine indoor futsal fields, plus 70 apartments, a 150-room hotel, 43,000-sq-ft of retail space and a 391-bay storage facility. Minnesota The University of Minnesota is planning to build the University of Minnesota Veterinary Isolation Facility in Minneapolis. The single-story, 38,500-sq-ft building will contain biocontainment laboratories, large-animal isolation space, and a small-animal vivarium. The building is being designed by Architectural Alliance Inc. The project is valued at $27 million. North Carolina CSX is planning to construct the CSX Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal in Rocky Mount. The rail-to-truck terminal, a high-tech logistics facility, will connect eastern North Carolina to state ports. The roughly 500-acre site was assembled by CSX through property purchases and option-to-purchase agreements. The project is valued at $242 million, and, in addition to CSX’s commitment, the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation has agreed to invest $100 million in rail line upgrades to serve the site. Oregon The City of Portland is planning to renovate the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The project will entail constructing new bathrooms, a new scoreboard, life safety and ADA upgrades, new seats and concessions, plus improved acoustics and a curtain. BORA Architects has been selected as the designer, and Nelson Capital Construction Program Management LLC as the construction manager. The project is valued at $91 million. Texas Johnson Development Corp. and KDC Real Estate Development are planning to develop the Imperial Sugar mixed-use development in Sugar Land. The project will encompass 274 apartments, totaling 855,000-sq-ft, a 185-room hotel, and a 290,000-sq-ft retail and entertainment center, on a 700-acre site. Sugar cane was milled on the site for over a century, until 2003. Three Imperial Sugar Co. buildings—the eight-story char house where animal bone was once crushed and charred to process clear sugar syrup from amber syrup, a water tower and a warehouse—will be preserved. HOK has been selected as the architect, and D.E. Harvey Builders as the general contractor. The project is valued at $160 million. Arizona FNF Construction has started carrying out a bridge-replacement and pavement-rehabilitation project on State Route 264, within the Navajo Nation near Ganado, from milepost 441.19 to 450.02. The work includes overlaying the existing pavement with asphaltic concrete, shoulder widening and constructing a new Fish Wash Bridge to replace the existing bridge. Ohio Shook Construction has started renovating the Ford Motor Co. transmission plant in Sharonville. The plant manufactures 5R110 and 6R140 transmissions, which go into Ford trucks. The work will include removing old machinery, installing new equipment and equipment upgrades to support the  addition of a new transmission family and gear machining for two new transmissions. New Jersey 8/23 The Perth Amboy Board of Education is requesting proposals for construction management services for the Seaman Ave. Elementary School. The two-story, 128,000-sq-ft building will serve 700 students in grades K through 5. The project is valued at $43.5 million. Florida 9/2 Miami-Dade County is requesting qualifications for design-build services for two sludge-thickening and dewatering buildings, serving two wastewater treatment plants. The design-builder will perform engineering design, permitting and construction, and furnish all materials and equipment for the structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection and odor-control components. The south district plant’s average annual flow is 112.5 million gallons per day; the central district plant’s is 143 million gallons per day. The project is valued at $131 million.
