The Empire District Electric Co. faced a number of challenges when it retired two 1950s-era coal-fired power-generating facilities in Riverton, Kan. After evaluating various system-wide alternatives, officials decided to retrofit the existing simple-cycle unit. That meant expanding the Riverton Unit 12 Combustion Turbine to a one-on-one, combined-cycle unit.
The Riverton Power Plant is the first large-frame, combined-cycle power facility in Kansas. It consists of one nominal 143 MW Siemens V84.3A (2) combustion turbine generator and a new triple-pressure heat-recovery steam generator, an axial-exhaust condensing steam turbine generator and associated balance-of-plant equipment. Natural gas fuels the combustion turbine, with a nominal net-electric output of 255 MW.
