The U.S. 36 Boulder Turnpike Express Lanes make up the first multimodal transportation corridor in the state. The $350-million project created new toll and HOV express lanes, a bikeway and bus-rapid-transit (BRT) service from Boulder to Denver. The expanded, 12-ft-wide highway shoulders allow BRT buses to use the shoulder when traffic slows The express lanes have an innovative traffic-management system that uses closed-circuit cameras and sensors to analyze traffic patterns. Information directs drivers away from upcoming hazards and accidents. The project also created the first buffer-separated managed lanes in Colorado.
