The renovation and build-out of the 1957 Imperial Sugar brick warehouse helped launch The Discovery Center and its five galleries for children’s interactive learning. The project also created a new block structure for staff offices, storage and a break area.
The team removed 50-year-old pipes, communication wires and even old train tracks to construct footings and the 30-ft-tall entry’s Venturi Structure. Another challenge was waterproofing the exterior walls with a liquid membrane on the interior and a clear membrane on the exterior to preserve the original clay blocks. The project was delivered on time and budget.
