Nearly 200 attendees were on hand in Orlando for ENR Southeast’s Best Projects awards luncheon. More than 35 projects were honored for their construction and design accomplishments. Sun Trust Park in Atlanta was named Project of the Year. The project was submitted for the contest by both American Builders 2017, the joint-venture contractor led by Brasfield & Gorrie, as well as by Populous, the project’s architect. Representatives of American Builders are pictured above. All of the Southeast’s top category winners are competing against other award-winning projects from across the country for recognition in ENR’s Best of  the Best program.

At about the same time that the Georgia Public Service Commission was preparing to announce its decision to approve continued construction at Georgia Power’s Vogtle nuclear plant, crews were planning a milestone concrete placement. On Dec. 22—just a day after the PSC gave the go-ahead for further construction—Georgia Power reported the placement of nearly 1,300 cu yd of concrete inside the Unit 4 containment vessel. According to Georgia Power, the continuous placement lasted 21 hours and involved more than 100 workers and more than 120 truckloads of concrete. “The placement occurred in three main locations: inside the reactor vessel cavity, in the refueling area and on the east side of the containment vessel. This milestone supports the placement of the reactor vessel early next year,” Georgia Power stated. The utility further noted that construction crews placed more than 57,000 cu yd of concrete at the site in 2017.
