ENR's "2017 Year in Construction" Photo Contest Winners

Photographer Sue Zaybal had been standing at ground level to document how crews with Malcolm Drilling shored up an excavation in a high-water-table area. But it wasn’t until she put on her mud boots and got down into the 15-ft-deep hole with the workers that she was able to “capture the right feel,” she says.

Vast expanses. Whimsy. Repeating patterns. Unusual vantage points. During judging of the hundreds of photos submitted into the 2017 ENR Photo Contest, entries seemed to organize themselves into discrete subjects. These themes have been assembled on each of the following spreads—see if you can decipher each one! From project superintendents to professionals, the photographers capturing this year’s best images depict not just the drama and difficulty of construction work, but also its beauty and, in some cases, even its serenity. Driven by the passion and dedication of the photographer, each of these images tells a story. And occasionally, the contest photo leads to a future ENR story, helping to pique the interest of our editors to explore the challenges and lessons learned on the projects that the artists have photographed. ENR is grateful to all the photographers and submitters who shared their work with ENR readers in this year’s contest.
