The Hackensack University Medical Center Emergency Trauma Dept.’s expansion included 35,660 sq ft of renovated space and 23,290 sq ft of new construction in order to increase efficiency and offer patients a state-of-the-art facility.
Work was split into five phases to ensure that the renovation and new construction occurred without disturbing ongoing hospital operations, and each phase consisted of additional sub-phases.
Surgeons had the cellphone number of the general contractor’s superintendent in case any noise or vibration proved disruptive and needed to be halted immediately. This ensured that patients received a high level of care during construction activities.
The project team implemented BIM with laser scanning to accurately assess the existing space and conditions, helping the team identify what elements needed to be removed; these scans will also be a resource for the hospital to use for future projects.
Full scale mock-ups allowed user feedback in order to avoid redesigns, delays and cost overruns, judges noted.
The core focus of the project was aimed at the surrounding community—seeking to meet the health needs and long-term requirements of the local population.
