Located 25 miles north of Fort Worth in Haslet, this intermodal railroad project involved track construction, pavement, ditch grading and placement of culverts. Coordinating and phasing construction within an active major facility challenged the team to reduce operational impacts. Phasing, for example, was expanded from three to seven phases to minimize track shutdowns and allow for new construction to be installed under live tracks.
The team made several key adjustments during construction. For example, the designated size of one of the box-culvert trunk lines changed as fabrication for the originals began. This task was immediately halted until the new design could be submitted. Meanwhile, crews completed sloping and shoring to stay on schedule.
And, because the gas company was late in relocating its lines, pipe was built on both sides of the utility easements with bulkhead ends so that tie-ins could be completed soon after relocations were complete.
The project was delivered on time and within budget in March 2018.
