The team of Superior Construction Co. and WSP has been selected for the $90-million design-build replacement of the Interstate 20 bridges spanning the Augusta Canal and Savannah River on the Georgia-South Carolina border. Scheduled to begin next spring, the project calls for replacing the two sets of 1960s-era parallel prestressed concrete and steel beam structures—which suffer from substandard shoulder widths and deteriorating bridge decks—with two 125.5-ft wide bridges totaling 1,450 ft in length. Georgia and South Carolina will jointly fund the project, which also includes increasing capacity within the 2.4-mile corridor from four to six lanes.
