With three full floors, a basement level and a secure tunnel connected to other county jail facilities, this 246,000-sq-ft structure serves as the nation’s third-largest county jail system, taking in and releasing approximately 800 to 900 people each day. With the project adjacent to two busy city roads and an active railroad, the public’s safety was also a major focus. Crews completed excavation in phases in order to connect the secure tunnel to existing passageways, allowing streets to remain open at all times.
The project incorporated numerous sustainable elements and is on track to receive LEED certification.
