This Utah Dept. of Transportation project expanded Redwood Road from two to seven lanes, improving conditions for commuters traveling between Saratoga Springs and North Salt Lake. The use of 3D design and modeling was critical for coordination of proposed surface features and underground utilities, enabling the team to capture existing and newly installed underground utilities in real time. The resulting 3D model integrated the underground pipe network as-builts and resulted in overall accuracy to within plus or minus 1 in. The model also was used as a reference point for communications outreach to the many stakeholders affected by the project. It helped to mitigate concerns about the safety of installing raised medians and provided updated information to adjacent property owners, elected officials, community groups and local businesses.
