When the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) heard that an Xcel Energy rebate program could save it hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, it took action to put the plan in place. The program asks organizations to reduce their electricity demand when notified, and, in return, participants receive a monthly credit when they take their energy usage off the grid. The college’s anticipated savings through the program are around $800,000 per year, and CSM will gain additional reliability for key functions if the campus loses power.
CSM partnered with PowerSecure to provide an innovative medium voltage, utility-grade generator plant that includes three banks of Volvo 600-kW generators (five generators per bank). They work together across a medium voltage bus and are tied into the primary electrical service on campus.
