The 172-acre island in New York Harbor is “poised for growth as a laboratory for research, education and public engagement surrounding the critical issue of climate adaptation,” according to Trust for Governors Island President and CEO Clare Newman. An exploratory study will soon launch that will look at ways to bring different types of groups, from foundations and non-profits to companies and educational institutions, to the island to create what Newman calls "a platform for solutions" around mitigating the effects of climate change.
The aim is for this preliminary research to lead to an RFP for future construction.
