This hospital is the first full-service pediatric-treatment center in southern Colorado dedicated to the needs of children. The 294,000-sq-ft facility features six levels and includes 60 neonatal intensive-care rooms, 48 surgery and pediatric intensive-care unit beds, 31 emergency exam rooms, eight operating rooms and 34 recovery and pre-op bays. The facility has specially constructed spaces for MRI and CT scanners, fluoroscopy and ultrasound as well as 12 infusion rooms. The project team faced numerous challenges on such a large project, including several extreme weather events such as hail storms, rain and flooding that slowed work and led to unplanned repairs. The project also shared a site with the UC Health Memorial campus, which was operational and also undergoing a big expansion.
