Tennessee SR 68 at MP 5.2 Emergency Slide
Rhea County, Tenn.
Award of Merit

Contractor: GeoStabilization International
Owner: Tennessee Dept. of Transportation
Lead Design Firm: GeoStabilization International

When heavy rains caused part of one lane of Tennessee SR 68 to give way, local residents were faced with a two-hour detour. Coupled with SR 68 being designated as a primary detour route for the nearby interstate highway, Tennessee DOT and GeoStabilization International scrambled to begin repair work within 48 hours. Once a new foundation was in place, crews constructed a Geosynthetically Confined Soil retaining wall, built in 8-in. lifts, to become the roadbed for the refurbished roadway. The contractor was able to deliver the repairs in just over two months, while also enabling roadway access during the entire process.
