New Vista Prep School Breaks Ground in Phoenix

Stevens Leinweber Construction (SLC) recently broke ground in Phoenix on a built-to-suit Vista College Preparatory campus called VCP-Sueño Park. The 35,000-sq-ft building will include 15 classrooms, a cafeteria, a library, administrative offices, an auditorium and science classrooms. It sits adjacent to VCP-Maryvale, which offers access to a full-size gymnasium and soccer complex. SLC is providing design-build, construction management and interior finishes. Carhuff + Cueva is the architect.

NDOT Awards $99M Contract For Major Vegas Interchange

The Nevada Dept. of Transportation has awarded a $99-million construction contract to Fisher Sand & Gravel to build ramps, flyovers and street connections at Interstate 15 and the 215 Beltway in North Las Vegas. Atkins is the project designer.

The project will build two cast-in-place dual-lane flyovers, among other structures, including a 51-ft-tall, 1,800-ft-long east-to-north connection, the equivalent of five football fields laid end-to-end. The northbound I-15 to westbound 215 flyover will be longer than the Eiffel Tower laid on its side. The structures sit atop a network of drilled pilings that reinforce the subsurface. The largest measures 10 ft in diameter and reaches a depth of 104 ft.

The interchange currently averages about 34,000 vehicles per day, although traffic counts are expected to grow by 72% over the next two decades. The new direct system-to-system interchange will improve traffic, enhance safety and increase mobility, NDOT says.

Q&D Chosen to Renovate Landmark Building in Nevada

Q&D Construction has been selected as construction manager at-risk for the Heroes Memorial Building renovation in Carson City, Nev. The $11-million project includes completion of the programming and schematic design for seismic strengthening as well as a major remodel of the building and the annex.

The Heroes Memorial Building was designed in 1921 as a tribute to Nevada soldiers who fought in World War I and is currently used by the state’s attorney general.

McCarthy Building Cos. Begins Work on Robert Rice Elementary

McCarthy Building Cos. is constructing Chandler Unified School District’s Robert Rice Elementary School in southwest Gilbert, Ariz., near the Chandler border. The $23-million K-6 school will have room for 800 students. The 93,000-sq-ft project includes a gym and multipurpose room, media center, classrooms and administration space.
