Before the millennium began, Beijing’s roadways were packed with bicyclists. Motor vehicles have since taken over, but this project may bring the city’s transportation roots into the 21st century.

The elevated 6.5-km, five-lane Bicycle Tracks Project runs between Beijing's Changping and Haidian districts, connecting the Chinese capital’s science, technology and education regions via nine stations, and saving commuters time while relieving pressure on roads and railways. Because the bikeway was built in residential areas, it had to be durable and aesthetically pleasing—accomplished with aluminum railings, landscaping and green and orange asphalt concrete that denotes regular and reversible lanes.

The team cites industry breakthroughs that were created by placement of the asphalt concrete on the tracks’ bridge-like steel structure “with light load and narrow width.” With a zero-accident incident rate, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport awarded the project for its safe construction record.
