This 149-room Courtyard by Marriott, located at the foot of Utah’s Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood canyons, offers easy access to downtown and the area’s major ski resorts and fills a gap in hospitality offerings in the area. The project required custom design to adhere to the requirements of the city and the community while respecting the needs of the site and the hotel’s developer. Adding to the challenge was the fact that the hotel sits atop a previously constructed parking structure and between freestanding buildings that bookend the project. The sculptural shape of the hotel derives from the desired room count and the existing stairs and elevator from the podium parking structure. The architectural shapes were applied with a post-modern design aesthetic that incorporated references to mountain elements.
