Designed to replicate the warmth and flow of a private health care experience within a public health department, the new Will County Dept. of Public Health aims to meet the needs of a population that is expected to nearly double in the next 30 years. The 70,000-sq-ft, two-story health department replaces a facility that was one of the county’s oldest buildings. Elements of the previous building’s structure had to be preserved under the state’s Historic Preservation Agency guidance. Reconstruction of the first floor created a new footprint for the building. Early planning and careful collaboration between Leopardo Cos. and its subcontractors helped bring the project to completion more than $1 million under budget and two months ahead of schedule in May 2020. The new facility has department suites for emergency preparedness and response, environmental health, family health and behavioral health and administration. It also houses a tuberculosis clinic, a testing laboratory, conference rooms, waiting rooms, kitchenettes, break rooms and a 350-space parking lot.
