As soon as BE&K completed a 90,000-sq-ft campus for flu vaccine manufacturer Seqirus, it turned its sights to expanding Seqirus’ existing warehouse space by 48,000 square feet, including 12,000 square feet of pharmaceutical-grade vaccine cold storage—the largest in the country.
In cold storage areas, concrete floors were poured 15 and 10 inches deep, with Floor Flatness Levels of 80 and 60—compared with the standard warehouse levels of 30-40—and 475 aggregate piers were installed throughout the pad to provide additional support. Storage racks in the ambient and cold storage areas rise 46 ft, providing eight levels and wire-guided Raymond Swing Reach Truck. The warehouse extension provides space to store 2,000 pallets for Line 2, and fallow space to accommodate 1,000 additional future pallets.
The project began work in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic gained steam, resulting in the project experiencing supply chain issues and labor shortages. The BE&K team reworked its schedule to accommodate subcontractors’ schedules and still maintain all key milestone dates.
Seqirus’ facility in Holly Springs is the largest vaccine producer of its kind in the world, and the first of its kind in the U.S., and is now enhanced for seasonal production and enables sure production to respond to potential pandemics.
