As the Tampa area’s tech hub grows, established area manufacturing solutions provider Jabil chose St. Petersburg for a global headquarters for its network of more than a quarter million employees.
The Gensler-designed, Skanska-built 170,000-sq-ft facility that resulted brings offices, labs, customer engagement space, support services and amenities to a 33-acre lakefront campus.
Technology permeated the construction process, too, as the team determined it could lower the building’s environmental impact by replacing typical curtainwall with Jabil-developed SageGlass, which tints itself in response to the sun, reducing heat loads and lowering energy consumption.
To find the most cost-effective approach, Skanska and Gensler analyzed multiple building enclosure options, changing glass type, revising metal panel specifications and more, achieving significant cost savings, like $2.8 million saved by the switch from cast-in-place concrete to structural steel.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic pushing workers into remote workplaces, Gensler and Skanska sought to deliver a space that matches Jabil’s commitment to sustainability, health, safety and innovation, with touchless features and design elements to enhance employee well-being.
Located on Blue Heron Lake, the resulting curved, four-story building with open stairways and activated lobbies in common areas facilitates the evolving workplace and incorporates touchless features, daylight views, fitness center and outdoor walking trail.
