The fast-growing city of Zhengzhou, a major transportation hub in the heart of China, was in need of an additional elevated expressway to increase traffic capacity to 18 lanes from 10 lanes on the fourth ring transportation corridor. To construct a total of 93 kilometers of elevated expressway, the project team employed precast segmental bridge technology. Eight new precast yards with more than 400 precast stations were designed and built within five months to manufacture the 50,000 segments needed—what construction engineer Sun Engineering calls the world’s largest precast segmental bridge construction project. Construction speed for the precast factories was about five times that of a regular industrial facility, says the project team. About 1,200 different bridge frames were designed for the elevated expressway. During project duration, the entire design team of about 200 engineers worked and lived in a hotel complex to provide construction support and solve problems in very short time frames, the team says.
