ENR’s editorial staff is packed with talented journalists, editors, data managers and publication designers, and in the last few months we have recruited three new colleagues to add skill and experience: Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Editor Johanna Knapschaefer, Texas-Louisiana Regional Editor Daniel Tyson and Survey and Rankings Data Coordinator Jack McMackin.
Knapschaefer, a longtime ENR contributor, now adds depth full time to the team covering construction from New England to Mid-Atlantic states, working with Justin Rice. She was known to ENR readers for, among other things, stories about project management, the environment and worker health and well-being—including a recent award-winning feature story on how Boston area firms and unions are handling worker opioid addiction, called “Bringing Opioid Misuse Out of the Shadows.”
Jack McMackin
Fluent in Japanese after earning her bachelor’s degree in the subject and later working as an English and writing teacher in Japan for eight years, Knapschaefer developed a publication record that includes Architectural Record, BusinessWeek, the Boston Globe, American Banker, Modern Metals and others.
Knapschaefer keeps her ears and eyes open for stories. During an early-morning bus trip from Boston to New York City a few years ago, she was working on a story about a Mexican construction worker when she struck up a conversation with a passenger next to her who she learned was an electrical engineer researching smart buildings as a Harvard fellow. In Knapschaefer’s words, “A light bulb went off. Chatting with my fellow traveler, a potential source, was more important than trying to finish my profile,” she wrote in the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
Knapschaefer has enjoyed the changes brought by becoming a staff editor but does also look forward to her chances for outdoor adventures in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Tyson, based in Brownsville, Texas, is a native of War, W.Va., population 690. His family later moved to northern Virginia and he graduated from the now-defunct Wheeling Jesuit College with a history degree. Tyson spent more than a decade based in Mexico City, covering developments in Latin America, and most recently he worked as an energy industry reporter. He is now deeply immersed in construction industry matters.
The third recent addition to ENR’s staff, McMackin, is adding key skill in data management to boost the impact of its numerous national and regional industry rankings and support data journalism. A native of Dublin, Ireland, he has a degree in information systems from Technical University of Dublin earned while working at a company that did automated data management and compliance services for hedge funds, banks and other regulated financial businesses. He now lives in New York City.
We are so happy to have all of them on board.
