Construction has begun on the first new terminal in decades for the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in South Florida—a $404-million project at FLL led by JetBlue Airways Corp.
JetBlue has hired Parsons as program manager, M. Arthur Gensler & Associates for design services, KEITH as construction engineer inspector and Hunt/Moss as construction manager at risk.
The Broward County Aviation Dept., owner of the airport, announced Oct. 9 that its new Terminal 5 (T5) project is expected to be done in three years. In a joint agreement between Broward County and JetBlue, the latter will manage construction of T5 on behalf of the county.
The New York-based carrier is FLL’s second-largest airline. JetBlue also oversaw the modernization of Terminal 3, where JetBlue primarily operates, according to the announcement.
The 230,000-sq-ft facility is designed as a two-level, five-gate domestic terminal with check-in/ticketing areas, arrival/departure baggage processing, security screening checkpoint, and retail/food and beverage concessions, according to a news release from the airport.
Connecting to the airport’s existing onsite Cypress parking garage and Terminal 4 through multilevel pedestrian bridges or walkways, T5 is set for a mid-2026 completion and will be funded through various sources including airport bonds, Florida Dept. of Transportation grants and passenger facility charges.
Officials expect T5 to better position the airport to meet future demand, which the airport says will grow from the current 35 million annual passengers to 52 million within two decades. To help meet that need, T5 will accommodate up to 5 million annual passengers.
