Scope of work on this $8.6-million bridge rehabilitation included replacing the two existing Platte Avenue bridges over Sand Creek with a single bridge and adding sidewalks along the north and south sides of the street over the creek. Construction ended under budget and on time in October 2022.

new bridge’s two main spans consist of a bulb tee girder substructure with an 8-in.-thick cast-in-place concrete bridge deck on top; the total height of the girder/deck section in these two spans reaches 4 ft 6 in. In the section that passes over a trail, the designer utilized a single cast-in-place structural slab, or jump slab, with additional reinforcing steel that created an additional 3 ft 2 in. of clearance under the bridge. To construct the jump slab, the contractor first built an elaborate falsework shoring system to support the formwork, steel and concrete. Once in place, the structural engineer inspected and certified the entire shoring system before any construction began on the slab. Then after placing and curing the jump slab deck, crews deconstructed the entire shoring system from below.
