Located on the historic Stanley Hotel campus, this project renovated the former Caretaker’s Cottage, which celebrates both the hotel’s early 20th-century history and its role as inspiration for Stephen King’s novel “The Shining.” The existing cottage building was first constructed in 1909 as a residence for the hotel’s caretaker. Renovations restored the cottage to how it would have looked in 1909 while seamlessly blending in pop-culture references.
The original scope for this once-abandoned cottage was for a less than $150,000 renovation to transform the space into rentable rooms. But while the exterior renovation was taking place before the interior renovation, the owner added more to the scope of work. Despite adding more than $1.8 million in scope modifications, the construction schedule remained on track for completion in September 2022.
Crews gutted the cottage interior all the way down to the studs, removed unnecessary walls and then made structural modifications such as beam supports and framed new spaces. On the exterior, the team repaired stone and brick masonry, replaced exterior siding and trim as necessary and installed a new window.
