This 1927 cover depicts the tallest timber bridge in the world. Standing 204.5 ft high and 893 ft long, it was part of a rail line that hauled logs for the Pacific States Lumber Co. from its mill at Selleck, Wash., to Tacoma. Made entirely from old growth Douglas fir, its largest posts were 28-in. thick. The trestle was comprised of 404,000 board ft of posts and 432,000 ft of sawed lumber. The bridge was built in 110 working days of 8 hours each. The company’s crews were cutting 7 million to 8 million ft of timber per month at the time.
