Calpine Corp. is planning to construct a carbon dioxide capture system at its natural gas-fired power plant in Yuba City. Project scope includes construction of equipment foundations and a 0.5-mile connector pipeline; installation of a liquid absorption system; purchase and installation of a CO2 solvent stripper, a CO2 depleted flue gas exhaust tower, gas compressors, heat exchangers and supporting equipment. The facility will be able to capture up to 1.75 million metric tons of CO2 per year. ION Clean Energy Inc. and 1PointFive Sequestration will provide process technology and engineering services. A construction schedule will be developed following completion of a front-end engineering design (FEED) study, expected in late 2024. The estimated project cost is $540 million. North Carolina

Natron Energy is planning to construct a sodium-ion battery plant at the Kingsboro Business Park in Kingsboro. Scope includes construction of 1.2 million sq ft of building space; and purchase and installation of slurry coating and drying, slitting, punching, pouch cell assembly, stacking, welding, electrolyte filling and sealing equipment and systems. The plant will be able to produce 24 GW of sodium-ion batteries per year. Completion is expected by 2032. Project cost is estimated at $1.4 billion. Vinton Steel LLC is planning to modernize its rolling mill and construct a new steel plant in Vinton. Project scope includes construction of 1.5 million sq ft of building space, including an electrical substation, water and fume treatment plants, maintenance facility and equipment foundations; erection of structural steel; installation of an electric arc furnace, ladle furnace, continuous casting machine and continuous rolling mill; purchase and installation of a cooling tower, air compressor system, conveyors, overhead cranes and fume treatment; quenching, tempering, spooling and finishing equipment; transformers, isolators, power and control cabling, switchgear and water treatment equipment. The project will increase production capacity for rebar and round steel to 300,000 tons per year. Construction is expected to begin in December 2024. The estimated cost is $230 million.
