A state-of-the-art public safety center and an advanced manufacturing and transportation facility have replaced outdated facilities at Chabot-Las Positas Community College to support a comprehensive curriculum for careers in various public service industries. These interconnected buildings share common facilities and house several career technical education programs across 58,955 sq ft of space. The facility also includes a three-story fire tower and a burn room structure.

The complexity of the work involved more than 70 trade partners, 80 craftworkers, 100 pieces of OFCI equipment and 25 special systems. Contractor Overaa assigned dedicated foremen and project engineers to manage each category of work, including a specialized crew of more than 30 people for self-performed concrete work. A detailed staffing and responsibility matrix ensured seamless coordination.

A 100-year storm struck during the early phases of excavation and foundation work, threatening the critical path schedule and budget. To help ensure that work could continue, one of the team’s solutions was to install rat slabs to address bottom of footing conditions.

Despite the many moving parts, the team completed the project on time and within budget in August 2023.
