Ten acres of previously vacant industrial property has been transformed into open green space, a public plaza and 1,400 linear ft of waterfront promenade as part of this $51.9-million project. A walkway connects the waterfront to other new features, including a lookout pier, floating dock landing and playground.
Scope of work included the realignment of Water Street, including underground utilities, and reconstruction of the seawall at Berths 182 to 186, including the installation of a steel sheet pile wall. Crews also completed asbestos abatement and lead remediation on 10 buildings, rebuilt a rock revetment, placed a tidal stone feature and installed prestressed concrete piles. The project team embraced low impact development, installing various infiltration basins, bioswales, vegetation and permeable pavers throughout the project. These elements minimized stormwater runoff and promoted groundwater replenishment. All of the project's multiple phases and milestones were delivered on time and without any impact to the scheduled grand opening date in February 2024. While portions of the project were delayed by the pandemic, the project team developed solutions to work around such delays to ensure that critical project deliverables were completed on schedule.
