The $11.4-million remodel and expansion of this adoption center provides innovative housing for dogs, cats and small animals as well as support space and exterior adoption areas.

Primary goals for the Adoption Habitats remodel included maximizing the quality of animal habitats, creating a flexible design that accommodates the facility’s changing needs and integrating technology to improve efficiency of operations and enhance the guest experience. Proper ventilation and drainage helped create a clean and healthy environment, and the use of Solatubes helped maximize natural daylight. A design-assist delivery method contributed to a collaborative environment throughout design and construction. Early contractor involvement and subcontractor input helped inform several decisions, one being the detailing of the walls separating adjacent dog habitats. To create a safe and healthy environment for the dogs, these walls needed to be both durable and cleanable. The chosen design can withstand full and frequent washing and includes concrete curbs at each wall in and around the dog habitats, water resistant gyp board and a continuous PVC wall covering.
