As Clemson University’s student ratio shifted to a majority female population, the university introduced two new women’s sports programs: lacrosse and gymnastics. To meet the needs of the new programs, the university planned, designed and constructed a $37-million women’s sports complex in just 22 months.

The complex features a 9,000-sq-ft lacrosse operations facility and a lacrosse stadium with bleachers and artificial turf. A 21,000-sq-ft gymnastics training facility includes a lobby, practice gym, offices, locker room, lounge and training room. A 10,000-sq-ft athlete recovery center houses yoga spaces, dry and wet float tanks, cryogenic chambers and offices for coaches, doctors and sports psychologists. An upgraded rowing facility with a sports medicine area features taping tables, hydrotherapy and administration offices.

The design team completed plans for three buildings and a stadium in nine months when it submitted 100% design documents. That was enabled in part by leveraging the speed and efficiency of preengineered metal structures. The project completed on time and on budget in January 2024.
