After a decade of searching for financing, the city of Clovis was able to obtain funds through federal, state, local and community organizations to construct this $7.8-million facility.

Spanning 13,000 sq ft, the senior center includes a quilting room, offices, rentable conference room, commercial kitchen and a large multipurpose room with motorized operable partition and acoustic ceiling clouds.

Despite the initial bid exceeding the owner’s budget, the project team successfully value engineered the project to bring costs back within range. About 65% of subcontractor revenue was directed toward local suppliers and trade partners.

In May 2023, storms dropped 11 in. of rain over eight days. Severe flooding on the site halted production for nearly 45 days. By the time crews were able to return safely, there was 2 ft of standing water surrounding the building and 6 in. of flooding in the hallways. To prevent further damage, the contractor immediately removed all standing water from the building and diverted it from the site, then removed all sheetrock above the water line and wet materials from the wall cavity. Before reinstalling material, an environmental testing agency and remediation experts were brought in to test all building spaces to ensure that there would be no mold or mildew growth.

Completed on time and within budget in February 2024, this facility is now a one-stop shop for seniors who live in and around the community.
