Collocated in the airport’s Terminal A garage, the facility consolidates all 10 on-site rental car companies. It also provides walkable access via a pedestrian bridge to the 33-gate terminal, with connections to others via AirTrain. Powered by a 5-MW solar rooftop, the 2.7-million-sq-ft project reduces the airport’s carbon footprint by consolidating thousands of parking spaces into one joint-use facility, reducing roadway and terminal curb traffic congestion and substantially improving land use, says the design-build team that coordinated and constructed 13 work packages for the base building project.
The facility consists of a six-level structure with a customer service area for rental car transactions, a quick turnaround area for fueling 54 cars and a car washing facility with 12 bays and storage areas for rental car fleets. The project was finished in four years on schedule and at budget, says the team.
