Maintaining safety was a priority at a $97-million project by WIN Waste Innovations that virtually eliminates the emission of sulfur dioxide —an acid rain precursor—at two landfills in Ohio.

Gas generation rates for both sites are predicted to increase over the next 20 to 30 years, so a scalable solution was provided in the form of two desulfurization units installed at each landfill.

The construction team held brainstorming sessions and completed a risk analysis to identify potential issues that would affect safe, on-time completion of the project and that would have impacts on neighbors, the environment, ongoing operations at the landfill and the procurement process.

It developed site-specific hazard and safety plans, specific crisis management plans and held daily safety briefings.
