Constructed on what was a 65-acre cornfield, this $107.4-million high school spans 230,000 sq ft and will accommodate 1,300 students. Beyond traditional classrooms, the campus features learning studios and career and technical education labs, an arena-style gym, a cafetorium, a public auditorium with telescoping seating as well as a stadium, track and practice fields. To maintain the budget, key trade partners joined before schematic design to provide pivotal insights into navigating material procurement and maintaining accurate target budgets. In the end, $275,000 was returned to the district.

Facing utility challenges on a greenfield site bordered by an active train track, early coordination with utility providers and the railroad company proved to be crucial. Initiating conversations at the project’s outset ensured timely crossing agreements and easements, preventing utilities from becoming a critical path item and safeguarding the school’s opening timeline. To maintain budget and allow for future growth, the team used a preengineered metal building for the field house. In addition to being cost-effective, this choice also provides flexibility for future expansion, allowing for additional bays as needed.

The design integrated expansion potential throughout the facility, allowing for the seamless addition of classrooms should the need arise. Core spaces were designed to the highest capacities, minimizing the need for significant additions. This proactive and comprehensive approach ensures the longevity and adaptability of the school’s infrastructure, aligning with the district’s commitment to a sustainable and future-ready educational facility.
