As part of a three-mile greenway project that connects neighborhood green spaces, this pocket park and intersection improvements project turned outdated infrastructure into safe and culturally relevant play spaces with shaded bench structures, a half-court basketball area, a decorative mural wall, concrete skate features for skateboarding, irrigation improvements and stormwater capture. Located across the street from a middle school, the project also provided right-of-way improvements that widened the sidewalks and slowed traffic by condensing the roadway to one lane in each direction, creating a safer route for kids to cross the street.
Initially, the team faced a nearly two-month delay due to the intricacies of the permitting process to convert a commercial space into a green space for a park. The contractor adjusted the schedule to work on the right-of-way portion of the project first while waiting on the necessary permit for the park area. Road improvements, therefore, began while school was still in session. As a result, the original construction sequencing plan impacted necessary lanes for school buses as well as pedestrian access to the school. Faced with additional traffic areas, surrounding sidewalks were blocked off and pedestrian activity rerouted, but this would have forced middle-schoolers to walk down an extra block to cross the street. Given the huge safety risk, PCL worked with the school to keep the majority of the intersection open and provided a direct pathway from nearby housing.
