This $41.25-million indoor sports facility spans 140,000 sq ft and features a 200-meter permanently banked track with a World Athletics-certified surface. Installing the 12-degree bank oval, sprint lanes and dedicated spaces for throwing and jumping events required early coordination with an Italian track manufacturer. To accommodate the raised track surface and its depressed slab areas, the concrete contractor built floating forms on a structural slab with void form, planning out the installation to maintain superflat tolerances.

The facility’s peak interior height of 72 ft added an additional layer of complexity when it came to installing the timing and sound systems, which would require 65-ft boom lifts. But crews had to be careful moving such equipment on the carton form slab, taking time to ensure the slab maintained its structural integrity.

A tension fabric structure, consisting of a preengineered metal building enveloped inside and out with an ExxoTec PVC fabric liner, serves as the building envelope. This eliminated the need for interior columns, providing expansive clear spans.

Crews installed perimeter foundations before erecting the tension fabric structure over the dirt, with the roof in place. This allowed intricate interior concrete work to proceed regardless of weather conditions. Simultaneously, the Italian track, which was manufactured overseas and shipped to the U.S., was then put in place by the Italian install crew.
