Walter J. Bogdovitz, 87, a noted hydroelectric dam engineer at Chicago-based water resources development firm Harza Engineering Co., who managed work on record-setting global projects and later led the firm, died in Dallas on Nov. 17, 2024, said a family member. He joined Harza after earning a civil engineering degree in 1959. Bogdovitz and family “soon began a great adventure spending years on construction sites” in Thailand, Venezuela and the U.S.,” said a family obituary. Harza’s history of “successful projects” globally includes Reza Shah Kabir Dam in Iran, one of the tallest thin-arch dams ever built and the Guri project in Venezuela, the largest global hydroelectric facility when its first stage was built in 1978.

“Walter’s engineering skills and knowledge were in great demand,” added the obituary, noting his other major global consulting assignments. Bogdovitz became Harza president and CEO in 1989 and retired in 1994. It merged in 2001 with engineer Montgomery Watson to become global energy and environmental engineer MWH, which was acquired by Stantec in 2016.
