Product Snapshot: New Machines Roll Out at Work Truck Show
After a decade supplying hybrid power for city buses, Allison Transmission is now rolling out its H3000 hybrid fully-automatic transmission. Built for medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks, the electric motor-generator is sandwiched between the diesel engine and Allison's 3000 Series transmission. Combined with a lithium-ion battery bank, the system offers regenerative-braking storage that promises to cut fuel consumption by up to 25%.

Navistar is expanding its offerings in the Class 5-8 truck portfolio. The International TerraStar commercial truck, launched in 2010 in an 4x2 model, is now available in a 4x4. It's powered by a 300-hp, 6.4-liter V-8 engine that can deliver 660 lb-ft of torque. It features an Allison 1000 Series transmission and a Fabco TC-28 gear-driven transfer case. The rig has huck-bolted cross members that have a rail strength of 80,000 psi. The TerraStar's cab is available in extended or crew-cab configurations, and it is constructed out of double-sided, galvanized high-strength steel.

Introduced at the 2013 Work Truck Show, the Ford Transit chassis cab and cutaway variations are designed to accept aftermarket body modules ranging from custom cargo delivery to utility body. The chassis cab and cutaway are available with three wheelbases: 138 in., 156 in. or 178 in. It is available in gross-vehicle-weight ratings ranging from 9,000 lb to 10,360 lb. Engine options include a standard 3.7-liter V-6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 3.2-liter Power Stroke diesel. The 3.7-liter V-6 also is available with a compressed natural-gas/liquid-propane-gas conversion kit.

At this year's Work Truck Show, Mack introduced the Granite Medium Heavy Duty 4x2, which is a lighter truck in the Class 7 and Class 8 categories. Under the hood, it boasts a Cummins ISL9 engine rated at 345 hp with a maximum torque of 1,150 lb-ft. Available in heavy-duty or medium-duty configurations, the Granite 4x2 can accept a wide variety of body options, including ones designed for utility, dump and municipal applications.

The Western Star 4700SB all-wheel-drive model is powered by a Cummins ISL engine at up to 300 hp and 1,300 lb-ft of torque. The truck is made of lightweight components for vocational applications, boasting 16,000-lb front axles and 40,000-lb rear axles. To further reduce the weight, it is available with a 1/2-in., 3.2-million RBM single-channel frame-rail option. The 4700SB's 42� wheel cut allows for greater maneuverability on jobsites.

The Nissan NV200 Compact Cargo Van has 122.7 cu ft of cargo space with a maximum payload of 1,500 lb. It is 4.5 ft shorter in length and 2.5 ft shorter in height than the Nissan NV 2500/3500 high-roof cargo van, offering a smaller footprint for contractors. The van is able to carry standard 40-in. by 40-in. pallets. It is powered by a four-cylinder engine rated at 131 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque. The NV200 is rated at 24 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
