Product Snapshot: ICUEE Show Rolls Out New Gear

One of the largest exhibitors at ICUEE, Altec showcased a new 45-ton boom truck that meets ANSI standards for both mobile cranes and aerial work platforms, cutting risk and setup hassles for crews needing to hoist personnel and materials. The AC45-127S tops out Altec's truck-mounted crane line and includes a 127-ft-long, five-section boom and can be had with a 55-ft telescoping jib, a tilting cab and a 800-lb-capacity work platform. The unit is designed for minimal boom deflection at a 100-ft radius and requires no road permits.

To celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2014, Toro came to the Oct. 1-3 International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition in Louisville, Ky., to showcase a new line of horizontal directional drills, ride-on trenchers and plows acquired from Astec in 2012 and rebadged in Toro's red livery. According to Mike Hoffman, chairman and CEO (pictured at trencher controls), the upmarket move into heavy equipment complements Toro's growing product portfolio, whose revenue is expected to rise an annual 4% and generate more than $2 billion in the company's 2013 fiscal year ending Oct. 31.

Tire-maker Michelin is increasing manufacturing capacity in Greenville, S.C., for its Tweel-X-SSL radial due to demand for the innovative roller, which requires no air. Introduced in 2012 for skid-steer loaders and shown at this year's ICUEE show, the Tweel is an integrated tire and wheel that behaves like a radial tire. Unlike solid or foam-filled tires, the Tweel's 50 rubber spokes hang in tension from a shear beam, reducing ground pressure and rolling resistance. Priced at $1,100 each, Tweel can be retreaded (blue LEDs not included).
