April’s decline returned the pace of construction starts to what was reported during the July 2015-January 2016 period.

During the first three months of 2016, total construction starts were $141.7 billion, down 10% from the same period a year ago.

For the first two months of 2016, total construction starts on an unadjusted basis were $87.1 billion, down 16% from the same period a year ago.

Construction industry confidence remains high despite stock market jitters.

Rounding out the top five metro areas in 2015 were Miami, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Chicago and Washington, D.C.  Cities ranked six through 10 were Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle, Houston and Denver.

Nonresidential construction spending totaled $681.2 billion in 2015, but declines in several key categories could be a cause for concern.
