Two of three project of the year finalists are reconstructions in a year of rebuilding

ENR’s Excellence in Safety Award is now in its ninth year as part of the annual regional Best Projects competition. This year, ENR Texas & Louisiana is honoring four projects for their outstanding safety records and job-site procedures.

Located in Walnut Creek, Calif., the $130-million Viamonte senior complex meets several ambitious—and sometimes conflicting—goals at once: a small community fitting seamlessly into a larger mixed-use development; condos designed for independent living that also allow for assisted care; and an enclosed courtyard built around an existing 500-year-old oak tree.

Construction on the 37,000-sq-ft building was on track for early completion in mid-March 2020 when COVID-19 shelter-in-place (SIP) orders brought work to a screeching halt. Yet within 48 hours, the project team was ready to safely resume work, deploying protective equipment and new safety protocols that, under normal circumstances, might have required several weeks to plan and implement. 

The winners of this prestigious award will be announced at our Best Projects award ceremonies in October.

ENR Texas & Louisiana honors 18 Best Projects and 29 Awards of Merit across 18 categories, and announces a new special award for Excellence in Sustainability.

Both the sustainability and safety winners will be honored along with other Best Projects winners in ceremonies in Salt Lake City and Denver in the last week of October.

39 projects overcome the supply chain and other challenges of 2020 to be named ENR Midwest Best Projects in our 11-state region.
