Winthrop Center recently became the first tower in the city to insert an unusual concrete foundation known as a “sky mat.” 

A pair of projects in Boston, one a skyline-topping tower, the other an affordable housing complex, are poised to put the Boston area on the map when it comes to environmentally sustainable design.

After successfully completing the mind-boggling top-down expansion of the 932,000-sq-ft facility, with its 45-million-lb landmark roof shored safely overhead, the Mortenson-led building team overcame myriad supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19. 

Contract has a total value of $209.9 million.

Shimmick Construction successfully completed the 36-in.-dia pilot pile casing installation at San Francisco’s Millennium Tower, proving the efficacy of the initial step of a less-disruptive construction method designed to allow the paused foundation fix to resume.

Contractor John Moriarty & Associates has filed to place liens on the property, alleging project payments it still is owed.

Amazon’s $2-billion Housing Equity Fund is revving up to help preserve and develop 20,000 affordable housing units by the end of 2025.

Project site is in Eko Atlantic, a city being built on reclaimed land.

Plans call for completion of a 750-ft-tall residential tower by 2026.
